Neglected Puppy In Paola Remains Unseized Despite Inspections And Weeks Of Reports
A neglected puppy has been left in a yard in Paola without food, water, or shelter – and despite word from Animal Welfare (AW) to tackle the issue, the puppy remains in the exact same condition.
“There’s a puppy that is being kept in a yard, with no food, no water, and no shelter. Animal Welfare have been notified since 6th August about this dog. I’ve sent constant reminders,” an animal activist told Lovin Malta under condition of anonymity.
AW officials showed up to the scene on 27th August, when they gave the dog owner until today to provide the dog with a shelter.
However, no officials were present today at the end of the deadline to ensure that their instructions were followed. Typically, an inspection is held the day after the deadline ends.
Officials did visit the house a number of times in past, but were unable to locate the owner.
Nonetheless, almost a month later, the dog remains without any shelter.
This is not the first time the owner has had a dog removed from their care. AW has already confiscated a dog from them, therefore one would assume that more immediate attention would be given to the case – considering that the owners have already proved to be unfit.
“Is this the life this dog deserves?” the activist asked.
When the activist spoke to AW to discuss what happened, she was told that they were out on sick leave.
This is not the first time AW has been put under pressure for not doing its part in ensuring the safety of animals on the island, and there have been many claims that this is because they are severely under-resourced.
Due to this, there are animals suffering all throughout Malta’s streets and normal citizens are bearing the financial and emotional burdens to take care of these stray or neglected animals.
This story comes only a few weeks after AW used a food delivery van to rescue a litter of newborn kittens but instead froze them to death in a mere 15 minute trip.
This only strengthens activists argument that the state of AW in Malta is at an all time low. It needs adequate and efficient reform that will provide the staff with the training, skills, and resources it needs to properly safeguard the state of pets and strays on the island.
