As the government has recently released a new zoo legislation for the islands, animal organisation Vuċi Għall-Annimali has praised the move, noting various promising elements.

“Vuċi Għall-Annimali praises the fact that the Zoo legislation is finally out. We hope that it will not be withdrawn again after yet another tantrum by a zoo keeper,” it said in a statement.

“While we are still in the process of fully digesting the new law, there are several promising elements. Section 7 (5), which prohibits interaction, is a significant step forward.”

Althea Galea expressed, “We hope this applies universally to all zoos, putting an end to the practice of petting big cats and swimming with or petting dolphins. While the law allows for exceptions, we are optimistic that it will not just be a document on paper, allowing these cruel practices to continue.”

The organisation noted how the new law is an improvement over the previous one in structure, but its “effectiveness relies heavily on enforcement by the Director responsible for Veterinary Services”.

“The Veterinary Regulation Department’s shortcomings in enforcing and safeguarding animals are evident. Additionally, the responsibility for issuing licenses lies solely with the Director, and it is the government’s duty to ensure that operators comply with the law rather than allowing for self-regulation.”

Vuċi għall-Annimali and vegan activist Darryl Grima have raised a crucial question: “Will all establishments that display animals for entertainment, including those operating without a license in violation of the law, be compelled to adhere to these regulations?”

“We see this as a positive step, but we firmly believe that it must be followed by a comprehensive restructuring of the Veterinary Regulation Department, detailed guidelines, and rigorous enforcement, which we are ready to support the drafting of.”

“We believe this could potentially improve the long-term welfare of these animals. However, we still strongly oppose keeping them confined to cages and imprisonment for their entire lives,” it concluded.
