Ħal Għaxaq was full of wagging tails and curious little minds this week as kids took part in an adorable and educational activity all about animal welfare.

With furry friends by their side and books in hand, children got an up-close look at just how important animals are—not just as pets, but as companions, protectors and helpers in society.

The event, attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, aimed to nurture empathy and awareness from an early age.

“Love for animals begins during childhood,” she said. “Through activities like these, we continue to instil values of empathy, respect and love for animals in future generations.”

Kids were also gifted animal-themed books to help build that bond through reading—combining learning with a healthy dose of fun. The books were provided by the Office of the Animal Welfare Commissioner.

And it didn’t stop there, children met dogs and horses from the Police Force, learning about the important roles animals play in public service—from search and rescue to everyday community safety.

Mayor Karl Boxall also highlighted the long-term impact of such events, noting that these types of educational initiatives create “future generations with greater awareness of animal welfare.”

It’s proof that when you mix education, community and a whole lot of paws… you get something pretty special.
