Ramla l-Ħamra Joins Turtle Season With Third Nest Of The Year

It’s turtle season, and Ramla l-Ħamra has welcomed its third nest of the year, as confirmed earlier this morning by Wildlife Rescue Team Malta.

“After teasing us yesterday with a long crawl but no nest, mama turtle returned very early this morning to lay her nest,” the NGO wrote on its social media pages.

It went on to say that “following the false crawl the night before, our volunteers were monitoring Ramla l-Ħamra overnight, and at around 2am, mama turtle returned.”

Once the nest was spotted, Wildlife Rescue Team Malta notified the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and together, both teams visited the site and confirmed the nest.

The mother turtle was checked for a microchip, and since none was found, one was inserted and she was officially named Johanna.

Wildlife Rescue Team Malta is encouraging anyone who wishes to volunteer to email [email protected]. The team also thanked Anna and Jessica, the volunteers who were on shift when Johanna nested.

Meanwhile, ERA is appealing to the public: if you spot a turtle or nest, call 22923500 (ERA) or 99999505 (Nature Trust Malta).
