Three out of eight feral pigs that were recently captured by a Marsaskala animal sanctuary after years roaming the streets have already found a new home.

A spokesperson for Sunshine Animal Sanctuary told Lovin Malta they are pleased with the response it received from the public after it issued a call to adopt them.

“We are glad to see that people are acknowledging farm animals as individuals who deserve love and care, just like cats and dogs,” they said, also thanking the public for their continuous donations.

Meanwhile, Animal Welfare and a mystery company paid for the neutering and chipping of the eight pigs, as well as all other pigs currently being cared for by the sanctuary.

“Along with the donation from Animal Welfare, a certain anonymous company and the donations many of you have made, the total amount will help us cover the cost of food, vet bills, medication, and projects we are working on for Sunshine,” they said.

Sunshine Animal Sanctuary concluded by urging people who found a soft spot for these eight pigs to extend their compassion to all other pigs and farm animals “by switching to a lifestyle that doesn’t cause harm and suffering to these sentient beings.”

Last week, the sanctuary said the pigs had been roaming the streets for “many years”, disrupting people by entering their properties, ripping open rubbish bags and creating a huge mess.

One resident said she even saw the pigs desperately drinking water that had been tipped from a bucket onto the street, which was surely dirty and contained cleaning products.

“Of course, this wasn’t the pigs’ fault. They were doing what was needed in order to survive,” the sanctuary said.
