In a daring rescue at sea, wildlife responders saved a sea turtle that got entangled off Miġra l-Ferħa.

The distressed turtle was spotted by vigilant observers and swiftly brought to safety.

Once ashore, the turtle, named Mira, underwent an immediate veterinary examination.

“Turtle Mira had metal and rope entangled around her front flipper, that in turn scraped and damaged her face and carapace. The flipper is very severely swollen,” wrote Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on social media.

The NGO went on to thank Civil Protection Malta and the Armed Forces of Malta for helping in the rescue operation.

Wildlife Rescue Team Malta emphasised how critical it is that such rescues are handled by trained experts. Removing marine debris from animals is delicate work, and spontaneous release without proper medical evaluation risks greater harm.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers marine litter poses to our ocean life. Officials urge the public to properly dispose of waste and alert rescue teams promptly when wildlife in distress is seen. With continued efforts and awareness, more lives like Mira’s can be saved.

Wildlife Rescue Team Malta went on to remind its followers that their volunteers have wildlife handling permits and that if the public spots wild animals that need assistance, they should call the NGO on 99999505.
