Turtle nesting season in Malta has officially begun with the first nest of the year discovered at Ġnejna Bay on Monday 9th June.

The nest was found by workers from the Cleansing Division during routine operations. They immediately alerted Nature Trust Malta, which, together with the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), arrived on site to secure and protect the area.

ERA confirmed it will be issuing an emergency conservation order to further safeguard the nesting site.

The loggerhead turtle, or il-fekruna l-komuni, is considered globally endangered and is protected by both Maltese and international law.

Any form of disturbance during breeding or the destruction of eggs is a criminal offence, with fines starting at nearly €500 and reaching up to €2,400 per egg.

Authorities are urging beachgoers to act responsibly. If you come across a nesting turtle, keep your distance, avoid making noise or using lights, and immediately report any sightings to ERA on 2292 3500 or Nature Trust Malta on 9999 9505.

The nest at Ġnejna will now be monitored 24/7, and volunteers are needed to help with observation and protection efforts.
