A vigil was held yesterday evening in memory of the cats killed in the Sliema and Gżira port areas, just hours before the suspect is set to appear in court.

Dozens gathered in a peaceful tribute organised by animal activist Romina Frendo, who led the walk through Cuschieri Street in Gżira, onto Patri Marjanu Vella Street, and ending in Our Saviour Street and St Charles Street, Sliema, the very areas where several cats were found dead in recent weeks.

One powerful moment captured during the vigil showed an elderly man who’s been taking care of the local strays for the past four years. Heartbroken but determined, he shared how he’s doing his best to protect the animals and ensure no more harm comes to them.

The 31-year-old suspect, a Japanese national, was arrested by police on Thursday night. He was reportedly caught carrying packets of cat food and latex gloves, similar to those seen in surveillance footage linked to the killings. A search of his home followed, where police collected clothes seen in CCTV recordings.

The man is expected to be arraigned in court later today.
