The fried egg jellyfish is back with its first appearance at Ramla l-Ħamra as it swayed along with the current.

The first fried egg jellyfish(Cotylorhiza tuberculata) was spotted by citizen scientist Sabine Rosel earlier today. The species is not harmful and “is making its first appearance in Maltese waters earlier each year, as the warm sea temperatures it thrives upon are being reached earlier in the summer season,” wrote Marine Biology Malta on social media.

In Maltese, the species is nicknamed as “Tal-Lampuki”, making reference to the fishing season which opens in around mid-August. In Malta, it is also known as “qassata” due to its shape and size.
