Watch: Meet Odin, San Blas’ Adopted Former Police Dog Who Still Has So Much Love To Give
The San Blas Female unit has just welcomed an adorable and furry new resident aptly named Odin who has just retired from serving the country as a dedicated police dog.
“He has so much love, I’ve never seen anything like it,” a Caritas team member said fondly.
Odin worked for eight intensive years with the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Malta Police Force where he searched for and found explosives. The Belgian Shepherd joined the force in 2015 when he was just two years old.
Odin did some important work on the island. He was a search dog during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting who used his sniffing capabilities to suss out the bedroom of the then-Queen of England.
After all those years of hard work, Odin can now wind down in his new home, at the San Blas rehabilitation centre in the female unit where women recover from substance abuse.
He’s proved to be a majorly loved addition to the community, with many patients finding comfort in his calm and friendly demeanor. He was adopted by Caritas in August of this year because the team truly believes that animals can be of great help to the residents.
The policeman who worked with the canine was unable to take him home once Odin retired, so the pup was put up for adoption.
Odin notices which residents need some help, according to Caritas team members.
“For example, if someone starts crying or they’re just feeling low, the dog feels it instantly. Before, he offered a service to Malta, but now, without him knowing, he’s offering a service to our residents.”
Caritas is organising a fundraising marathon for this weekend on Saturday 18th between 11am and 11pm. The NPO’s whole mission is to alleviate poverty and social injustice so if you’d like to contribute to the noble cause, you can donate €20 on 5100 2035 and €50 on 5190 2089.
