Watch: Moments Before Young Flamingo Shot Down In Front Of Tourists In Gozo

At Gozo’s Xwejni Salt Pans, a young Greater Flamingo was shot down in front of tourists, BirdLife Malta stated.

The bird was likely taking a rest from yesterday’s storm. Unfortunately, it fell victim to a hunter who took a shot at it, then loaded it into a vehicle and drove off.

“Gozo has become a mecca of illegalities as bad as Miżieb and l-Aħrax and our hope is that the enforcement authorities takes the situation seriously,” BirdLife Malta CEO Mark Sultana stated.

Here is a video of the bird moments before it was shot:

“The bird migration season has started and as has happened every year, a number of protected birds – even during closed season – end up being targeted by hunters who disregard the law, and are a far cry from the conservationists or scientists they try to portray themselves to be,” BirdLife Malta Head of Conservation Nicholas Barbara added.

BirdLife Malta urges the general public to report any illegalities to the police during the next five months, as hunting season kicks off.
