Watch: New San Vincenz Cat Café Manager Wants To Give Felines ‘Christmas They Deserve’
Animal activist Ackerley Pace has confirmed he will take over the running of a cat café in St Vincent de Paul, which had raised serious hygiene concerns.
Announcing this new role to his followers, Pace urged people to donate recovery cages and gastrointestinal food, as well as their time, to help these cats out.
“Although we stress that people shouldn’t abuse and exploit animals, this is what unfortunately happened at the sanctuary,” he said.
“In recent days, I was working to empty and sterilise the place because it was a complete disaster, with ACs not working and things like that. We arranged it as much as possible to help the cats out, and they are being fed, treated and taken care of.”
He stressed that no cat will be put to sleep unnecessarily.
“I thank Dr Souness and Animal Welfare, who are working with us to give this cat café a new lease of life, as well as everyone who helped us with bedding, litter and other things but we need more help.”
“They all need to be caged to avoid illnesses and they all need to be tested. Lets work together for this sanctuary. You can form part of this team. Let’s give these cats a better Christmas, which, as you can see from the photos, is what they deserve.”
The cat café was inaugurated in 2016, in collaboration with Animal Guardians Malta, to provide pet therapy to the elderly residents of St Vincent de Paul.
However, SVDP’s new CEO Jorgen Souness warned the cats were being kept in “inhumane” conditions, with dead cats found buried in the soil and in food bags.
Activist Carmen Coleiro, who ran the cat café, clashed with Souness and two security officials while filming them on a live Facebook video when she found out she had been evicted.
