NGO Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) and Vuċi għall-Annimali rescued an abandoned dog and rabbit found huddled together at the Chadwick Lakes Trail.

In a heartrending video posted by Vuċi għall-Annimali, the two animals could be seen curled up together at a veterinary clinic.

“When humanity failed us, we found each other,” the NGO captioned the video, informing followers that the pair had been vet checked. “The rabbit has mange, a flea infestation, and maggots, and is currently under treatment. The dog has an ear infection, has tested negative for both sandfly and ehrlichia, is being treated for the flea and tick infestation, and has been dewormed and chipped.”

Yesterday, the NGO posted photos of the pair of animals on social media, stating that “this abandonment is relentless. A barely one-year-old Fox Terrier and a rabbit were abandoned at Chadwick Lakes. They remained together, not even moving an inch apart.”

In a social media statement, the MRU explained that the dog and rabbit were rescued in a joint effort by the two NGOs. Cami Appelgren from MRU and Althea Galea from Vuċi għall-Annimali “responded to the sighting of the abandoned pets within minutes,” they explained. “In less than 30 minutes, they were in safe hands.”

“They were located curled up together and retrieved from within the valley. They will now be checked for injuries and then, if unclaimed, rehomed by Althea,” the NGO wrote.

“These two were seemingly dumped together since they took shelter together and were in a state of shock,” the organisation continued, emphasising that “abandoning a pet is a crime.” “A reminder that it is also the law to chip your dog and attach an ID tag to its collar.”

“NGO collaborations are the way forward!” MRU added.
