The first hatchlings in Gozo are here as 20 turtles made it to the water at Ramla l-Ħamra bay last night.

“Another magical moment in nature — the third nest at Ramla Bay in Gozo has officially started to hatch! On the first night, 20 tiny hatchlings made their way safely to the sea under the moonlight,” wrote Environment & Rescue Authority (ERA) on social media.

Volunteers monitoring nest 3 noticed obvious signs that the little ones were about to break out of their shells around 10pm yesterday night. 20 turtles made it to the water over five hours.

This nest was laid on Wednesday 18th June and the hatching took place on day 51. The nest will continue to be monitored for the coming nights.

ERA went on to ask the public to keep noise to a minimum, to avoid using bright lights close to the nest and to follow instructions from on-site volunteers.

NGOs Nature Trust, Wildlife Rescue Team Malta and Sostenibilità were thanked by ERA for their support in this incredible journey from sand to sea.
