Watch: Rare Angular Roughshark Rescued From Rockpool In Gozo

A rare angular roughshark, known locally as pixxiporku or ġurdien, was rescued from a rockpool along Gozo’s coast after becoming trapped in shallow water alongside a rough ray.
The shark was reportedly caught in the small pool in Marsalforn after a commercial fisherman left the area.
Tom Sprang, who shared photos and footage with Lovin Malta, was among the group who stepped in to help. He later shared the rescue on social media, calling it “a crazy day”.

Tom, along with Ewelina Wojcik and Job Buddenburg, managed to free both fish and release them back into open water.
This deep-sea species is rarely seen near the shore and is sometimes considered bad luck by fishers, who are known to spit on it before returning it to the sea.
Marine biologist Alan Deidun also shared the incident stating: “This species reputedly brings bad luck and is spat upon by fishers before being thrown back into the sea… I believe it’s actually the other way round, that humans bring bad luck to sharks.”
