WATCH: Tama, The Three-Flipper Turtle, Makes His Way Back Home After Four Years In Rehab In Malta

After four years in rehabilitation, Tama the sea turtle has finally started his new after he was released back into the ocean at Ghajn Tuffieha earlier today.

Tama arrived in the hands of Nature Trust Malta battered and bruised from a boat hit that resulted in a missing front flipper and a cut on his head. During the first eight months in rehabilitation, Tama was fighting for his life and his future was uncertain.

Fortunately, a missing front flipper isn’t as crucial to a male sea turtle as it is for a female and, under the guidance and care of Nature Trust, Tama began to adjust to his new life.

Four years later, Tama has gone from the brink of death to fully rehabilitated and now he’s ready to venture out into the ocean once again and continue his life in his natural habitat, all thanks to the combined efforts of Nature Trust and Mapfre Malta.

Because of his missing fin, Tama is unable to walk on sand and therefore had to be released straight into the sea.

Tama has also been fitted with a tracking device so that Nature Trust can keep track of him in case anything goes wrong. The tracker is also a crucial part of an Eu-funded project called Eurotrutle which aims to find feeding grounds for turtles.

After four years under Nature Trust, Tama the three-flipper turtle is ready to give back and help lead conservation efforts for the sea turtle populations. Go Tama!
