Watch: Vulnerable Mediterranean Monk Seal Spotted In Maltese Waters

ERA has confirmed the new sighting of the vulnerable Mediterranean monk seal in a video shared by marine biologist Alan Deidun.

“A welcome return to our seas……the monk seal! This species of marine mammal is known locally as ‘bumerin’ or ‘monka’ and the last recorded sighting of a Mediterranean monk seal in Malta dates back to 1974,” the marine biologist shared on his social media.

The Mediterranean monk seal is classified as vulnerable but its population is on a slight increase, thanks to stringent protections under national and international law.

ERA urges the public and seafarers to report any monk seal sightings responsibly to help safeguard these creatures.
