Initial police investigations indicate that Raymond Grima, the Attard upholsterer whose garage was attacked by a gunman last Friday, was the intended target, not Lino Mangion, the hobbyist who happened to be in the store at the time and was killed.

In response to questions sent by Lovin Malta, the police said: “So far, investigations indicate that the target was Mr. Grima.” They also confirmed that neither Mangion nor Grima were known to the police.

The police had arrested four men that same evening in connection with the murder and attempted murder, but have now confirmed one of them as the main suspect.

It was reported that the suspect was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by the police force when he was seen to be suffering from drug withdrawal issues after his arrest, and the police have now confirmed this to Lovin Malta.

“The suspect was feeling sick (due to drug habit) and he was conveyed to Mater Dei Hospital for further examination and to ascertain that he could be kept in a cell,” the police said.

Murdered hobbyist Lino Mangion

When asked whether the police thought the main suspect was the mastermind behind the killing, or whether he was just contracted to be the killer, the police said that “due to the sensitive stage of the investigation, we are not in a position to comment.”

Angelo Mangion – known as Lino Mangion – died on Friday night from his injuries, four bullet shots, after he had just entered the upholstery store looking to buy wood for his motorcycle.

Raymond Grima, the intended target, was shot three times and is currently in hospital recovering from grievous injuries
