Raise A Middle Finger To Winter: Here’s What You Can Still Do In Malta On A Rainy Day

Article Featured Image

The time has come; winter is truly upon our island and many Maltese people are frequently feeling the frustration of being stuck inside. But not necessarily. Here are a couple of things you can do to not depress yourself inside.

1. Explore the depths of this country

The Maltese Islands are brimming with history and culture, and there are loads of museums and cave-dwelling tours that you can take part in to get your much-needed dose of some heritage appreciation.

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is described on the UNESCO World Heritage List as “a site that bears a unique testimony to a cultural tradition which has disappeared.” So if you want to get a break from the over-development happening on top, head down below to this underground prehistoric burial site.

One of Heritage Malta’s many, many museums

You have a choice between the museum of archeology and the national war museum in Valletta, or the museum of national history and St. Paul’s catacombs in Mdina, among much more.

Head to Fort St Angelo

Across the Valletta port, located at the centre of the Grand Harbour, is the stunning Fort Angelo. You can appreciate spectacular panoramic views of the Grand Harbour while grabbing a snack at the fort’s lounge area.

2. Have some good, wholesome indoor fun

Bowling

Use this time for a throwback to the early 2000s in Malta, when most kids hung around the bowling alley, played a game or two but spent most of the time trying their luck with the games to try win that soft toy from the machine that has yet to grant a winner.

Cinema

With Netflix and on-demand TV becoming so popular, going to the cinema has become a special event. So go all out in this terrible weather – get with the squad, pick out a cinema-special and over-order popcorn, nachos and coca cola. If you’re going to cinema, then you’ve got to cinema well.

Esplora

It’s the interactive science museum that’s in Kalkara which us adults are more thrilled about than our kids. Spend an afternoon engaging with science, visit the planetarium and stroll around its exhibitions.

Escape Room

After a short shutdown, the escape rooms reopen on January 25th (that’s today!). And if you’ve got a love for thrill, curiosity and problem-solving along with a competitive edge, then find a couple of friends to compete with and head on over to these Maltese escape rooms.

3. Go treat yo’self

Spas

Malta’s hotels boast a number of great spas that will surely help you unclench following a week of hauling yourself around the streets like a wet dog. And some of them are pretty affordable too, so you don’t have to be sporting a Ferrari to get a full body exfoliation detox.

Hair/bear dos

Go get your hair did and shake things up to give your life that little oomph it needs. Men (or ladies too, if you’re into that sort of thing), go get your beard shaped. Movember ended a long time ago.

Manicures

If you’re not the dedication type and can’t make such a major hairstyle change in your life, then get yourself a manicure or pedicure instead.

4. Go get drinks with friends

Cafes

Rainy weather is perfect for instagram photos of that coffee-table set up by a water drop-filled window. Grab a book, a friend and a relaxed vibe and find a cosy cafe to (safely) appreciate the day together.

Bars

There are a couple of iconic bars in Malta that you’ll only find here and that locals just love. Head to any one of these and take in that warm, time-stopping feel that only a great bar can give off.

Local Każin

Getting drunk at your local każin (band club) is one of those things that everyone needs to do at least once in their lifetime. Striking up a conversation with a stranger in a każin is quite easy, and you’re bound to meet some interesting people here.

Tag a friend you’re going to spend winter’s rainy days with!
