Valletta’s newly signed Yuri Messias scored a late goal in last night’s match up against Ferencváros, reviving the team’s hope of qualifying to the next round of the Champions League.

Valletta FC lost against Ferencváros in Budapest, but the late goal by forward Yuri Messias improves their chances of a comeback when Valletta face the Hungarian side in Ta’ Qali next week.

Ferencváros started off strong last night and managed to net two goals in the first half. The first was attributed as an own goal by goalkeeper Henry Bonello in the 19th minute and the second came from a penalty by former Juventus player David Lanzafame.

Lanzafame proved to be the biggest threat for the Valletta side when he secured his brace in the second half, putting Ferencváros up 3-0 by the 60th minute.

The decision to bring on Brazilian striker Yuri Messias in the second half paid off when he scored a late goal and revived the team’s hope of qualifying to the next round of the Champions League, putting the final score of the match to 3-1.

Valletta had suffered a major setback when Steve Borg was shown red for an elbow, marking him absent from next week’s fixture.

Valletta’s fate will be determined in their final leg next week at Ta Qali, where they’ll need to make up for their 3-1 deficit to qualify int the next round of the Champions League.

Valletta FC vs Ferencváros will be played at Ta Qali at 8pm on July 30th.

Meanwhile, Gżira United will face FK Ventspils later today at 4:45pm in the first leg of their second qualifying round for the Europa League.
