Two days before her 21st birthday, Maltese tennis star Francesca Curmi has beaten Macedonian athlete Lina Gjorcheska after a thrilling match where Curmi managed to dominate by winning two sets to one at the W60 Liepaja tournament in Latvia.

Prior to this match, Lina Gjorcheska was ranked at 249th in the global Women’s Tennis Association rankings.

Less than a year after Curmi cracked her way into the global top 500, the Maltese tennis player – ranked as 341st – managed to get the best of an athlete almost a hundred spots ahead of her in the world rankings.

Curmi has already been having a great year, having won a €25,000 prize for her performance at a tournament in May.

In the past week at W60 Liepaja – an International Tennis Federation tournament – Curmi has coasted through three wins after facing three competitors, and is now heading confidently into the next round.

Curmi is currently battling her way through a Quarter-Final match – on her birthday – against Romania’s Cristina Dinu, currently ranked at 242 in the WTA world rankings.

Results can be tracked live here.

A win would mean progressing to the Semi-Finals, bringing Curmi one step closer to a $60,000 prize.

Certainly seems like a good way for a tennis star to spend their birthday week.

Best of luck to Curmi in the matches ahead!
