Former boxing champion and the man behind the iconic Bertu’s Gym in Għargħur, Bertu Camilleri is a household name. Now celebrating his 78th birthday, Lovin Malta and Videocafe have released a teaser trailer for an upcoming documentary to mark the occasion.
The new co-production details all the notable moments of Bertu’s life, boxing career and his well-loved gym, so stay tuned – this inspiring story is one that you won’t want to miss!
The documentary will feature a host of interviews with people from all walks of life who tenderly shared their personal experiences of the gym, the impact it has had on their lives, and it’s safe to say that it transcends a simple workout place, becoming more of a safe space for the tight-knit supportive Bertu’s Gym community.
Local podcaster Jon Mallia is one of the many names featured in the documentary sharing his own anecdotes about the gym.
Bertu himself was trained by an array of top athletes in the field, including the late Iron Man of Europe, Charles Saliba, along with a couple of British boxers who ensured that his standard wouldn’t lower when he moved to the United Kingdom. There, he trained at the well-known Jack Solomons Gym where he used to fight three times a week.
Notably, this year also marks 40 years since Bertu, a former boxing champion, opened his gym to the public.
Initially, serving as a small space to train local boxers, Bertu’s Gym was also one of the first gyms on the island. However, it soon grew into Malta’s top gym for bodybuilders of all levels.
There’s a lot more to his story so stay tuned for more details on the documentary, coming out very soon.
