Conquering The Waves: Neil Agius’s Gruelling 36-Hour Training In Preparation For 100-Mile Challenge

Neil Agius, Malta’s ultra-endurance athlete, has just completed 36 hours of swimming in the last 54 hours, covering nearly 100km in Maltese waters.

This is all part of his intense preparation for his world-record 100-mile swim in the open sea crossing from Mallorca to Ibiza.

“There are days where I do not feel like turning up but I still turn up, it is really those days that set you apart from everyone else and prove your discipline,” Agius said.

He recently reported being stung by jellyfish approximately 15 times, describing the pain as something he had never experienced before. However, Agius remains undeterred and draws on these challenges as a source of energy and motivation.

The remarkable athlete will not only test his endurance, strength, and mental resilience but also aims to draw attention to the significant issue of pollution in seas and oceans.

Agius’s upcoming world-first attempt will involve a non-stop, unassisted, current-neutral open water sea swim that is estimated to take around 70 hours, covering approximately 160km.

Alongside his personal challenge, Agius is launching an awareness campaign with his eNGO, Wave of Change Malta. The campaign encourages sustainable lifestyle changes, such as embracing sustainable fashion choices, dietary habits, and domestic practices.

While Agius is no stranger to challenges, his recent training sessions, consisting of three consecutive days of 12-hour swims with only 10-hour rest periods in between, proved to be quite tough, even by his standards.

As he said, “I will be doing the big swim, while you’re doing the small change,” urging everyone to make small steps for change and wanting to have a future where our children can enjoy the sea.

Stay tuned for more updates from Neil Agius on his epic journey.
