Down, Set, Hut! Malta’s Only American Football Team Is Looking For New Players To Join Their Squad

It might not be the most popular sport in Malta, but American Football is starting to gain traction amongst the Maltese people after the country’s only team Phoenix Malta secured a new home and training grounds at Sliema Wanderers.

Phoenix Malta started off as a flag-football team three years ago but has recently transitioned into a full-contact team amidst a growing interest locally.

The team, which is still in its early stages, has now invested in pads, helmets and a new ground to call home where it hopes to attract a lot more people to the sport and fill in a 53 man roster that would make a full team.

The team trains every Thursday between 8:30 – 10 pm on the 3G pitch at Sliema Wanderers, a training ground that enables the team to practice deep pass plays and make use of several route trees that make up the game.

While it may not be a full-fledged team yet, Phoenix Malta is confident that it can attract enough people interested in the sport to hold its first-ever match on the island early next year.

In light of this, they’ve recently announced an Open Day for Thursday 7th November, where everyone from absolute beginners to diehard football fans can join in and experience what it is like to be part of an American football team.

Phoenix Malta is committed to giving everyone – regardless of their ability, age or fitness level – a chance at their beloved sport, so go ahead and check their open day out because you might just be the next Odell Beckham Jr in the making!
