Francesca Curmi Gives It Her All At International Finals Before Retiring Due To Shoulder Injury
Young Maltese tennis legend, Francesca Curmi gave it her all at the W50 Funchal Tournament, but unfortunately retired from the match early due to an injury.
Following her win against the UK’s Jodie Anna Burrage on Saturday, Francesca advanced to the finals and was set to compete against Belarusian Kristina Dmitruk.
The decisive match, held on Sunday, started off strong for Dmitruk, emerging victorious in the first set with the match ending at 6-1.
However, before Francesca could redeem herself, she unfortunately sustained a shoulder injury during the second set that ultimately ended with a score of 3-2, resulting in Dmitruk becoming the overall victor.

“Sad to have retired my last match in this tournament, not the ending that I was hoping for but I am extremely happy and proud of the effort i made this week,” Curmi said in an Instagram post.
Despite the challenging retirement, Curmi still cherished her accomplishments thus far and ended the day the same way she started, with a bright valiant smile.
“I’m super grateful for everyone who supported me and who keep supporting me constantly,” Curmi gratefully continued, “and in doing so helping me see that I am capable of doing much more than i think. Let’s keep going for more!”
Nevertheless, she made Malta proud once again with her inspiring resilience and positivity. It’s clear that this setback is just a stepping stone toward even greater achievements in her promising career.
Big congratulations to Francesca for reaching such honourable heights!
