From Mġarr To Serie A: Young And Promising Maltese Footballer Seals Deal With Top-Tier Italian Side
A young and promising Maltese football player has put pen to paper on a three year deal with Serie A club Sassuolo Calcio.
Sixteen-year-old Haley Bugeja has just completed the move to the Italian side from Mġarr United, marking a pivotal shift in the young footballer’s career.
“The time has come to close a very beautiful chapter in my life. But with that being said, a new one is also starting. I can proudly say that I have signed for US Sassuolo in Serie A, Italy. I cannot wait to get started in the green and black colours,” she said in a Facebook post.
Sassuolo Calcio is a formidable force in Italian women’s football and sat in sixth place during the 2019/20 season at 23 points.
Bugeja will join the likes of fellow Maltese Nicole Scibberas, who plays for Juventus, and Emma Lipman and Rachel Cuschieri, who both play for the Lazio side.
The young footballer impressed scouts during her five-year stint at Mġarr United and is posed to be one of Malta’s top international talents.
Bugeja also has garnered a good amount of international success, with one her more notable performances on display against Georgia at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 qualifiers where she secured a goal and assist in Malta’s 2-1 win.
She currently has six international caps with two goals.
