Italian Football Legend Gigi Riva Passes Away Aged 79

Italy’s all-time top goal scorer Gigi Riva passed away at the age of 79.

Riva was taken to hospital in Cagliari over the weekend for treatment for a suspected heart problem. Initially it was reported he was in stable conditions however it was later revealed his condition had deteriorated and he had suffered a heart attack more serious than anticipated. It was later confirmed the football star died on Monday evening

Riva remains, to this day, Italy’s national team’s all-time top scorer with 35 goals in 42 official appearances between 1965 and 1974 and he is considered one of the greatest strikers of all time.

Gigi’s accomplishments extend on an international scale where he triumphed in the 1968 European Championship and secured a runner-up spot in the 1970 World Cup.
