Malta Bows Out Of World Cup Qualifiers With 2-0 Win Against Montenegro
Malta’s national women’s football team closed off their World Cup qualifying campaign with an impressive 2-0 win in Montenegro.
Two-first half goals separated the two sides at the Trening kamp FSCG Stari Aerodrom in Podgorica in the last game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Unfortunately, it was not enough for Malta to enter the competition, who finished fourth in the group stage, four points behind second placed Bosnia Herzogovina, who will now go to the play off round. Denmark topped the group with an impressive 24 points.
Nonetheless, this is a great way to close off a competitive group stage for a young team that is showing tonnes of potential with countless players plying their trade abroad.
Maria Farrugia opened the scoring in 28th minute, before captain Emma Lipman scored just before half-time.
Lipman combined expertly with star Haley Bugeja before squeezing her shot into the near post for her first international goal.
Member of the team and rising football star Hailey Bugeja posted a proud statement on her Facebook giving herself and her teammates a well-deserved pat on the back.
“Sometimes, certain moments leave you truly speechless,” she prefaced.
“I know and understand how much this group sacrifices – how many obstacles we face that other people would have no reason to challenge.”
“And yet, we still manage to surprise everyone, sometimes even ourselves because I believe that we still don’t understand our true potential.”
“We’re looking to the future with enormous enthusiasm. I have immense pride in this group, staff and players for everything they do on the ground and even outside. Forza Malta.“
Well done girls, you’ve made Malta proud!
