Malta has qualified for its second consecutive water polo European Championship, a first in the nation’s history, after thrashing Belarus yesterday evening.
Karl Izzo’s men entered the game in need of a win after losing the away leg in Minsk 8-7, and they lived up to expectations – destroying Belarus 16-9 over four sessions. Captain Steve Camilleri scored six goals himself, while Matthew Zammit scored four, Aurelien Cousin scored three, Dino Zammit scored two and Jordan Camilleri scored once.
Malta will now compete in this July’s Euro Championship in Barcelona and will be hoping for a better tournament than the one in Belgrade two years ago – when the national team lost all four of their games.
