Malta’s national waterpolo team have secured their sixth consecutive qualification to the European Championship finals after a commanding 17-13 victory over Portugal. The result sees Malta join France as Group B qualifiers for the 2026 continental tournament in Belgrade.

Led by standout skipper Stevie Camilleri, who netted four crucial goals, Malta delivered a vastly improved performance following their shaky display against Ukraine. Coach Milan Cirovic’s side was sharper in attack, tighter in defence, and more composed throughout.

The Maltese started strongly, storming to a 4-0 lead in the opening session thanks to goals from Jayden Cutajar, Jeremy Abela, Matthew Zammit, and Benji Cachia. Solid goalkeeping from Jake Tanti ensured Portugal failed to find the net early on.

Although Portugal briefly rallied, Camilleri kept Malta in control with two more strikes including a penalty, while Nikolai Zammit, Liam Galea, and Jake Muscat widened the lead to 10-3 by half-time.

Despite a late push from Portugal, the Maltese never lost control. Further goals from Darrin Zammit, Jake Bonavia, and Galea sealed the win, ensuring Malta ended the qualifiers with maximum points ahead of their final group match against France.

Regardless of that result, Malta’s place among Europe’s top 16 teams is now confirmed. This marks another proud chapter in the country’s waterpolo history.
