Malta is making its mark at the European Juniors Weightlifting Championships taking place in Durrës, Albania, with two young athletes proudly representing the nation, Kim Camilleri Lagana and Rylee Borg.

While last year’s European Champion Tenishia Thornton was unable to defend her title due to injury, Malta’s presence remains strong on the international stage.

Kim Camilleri Lagana delivered a standout performance in the 53kg category, lifting 69kg in the Snatch and 92kg in the Clean & Jerk, for a total of 161kg.

She successfully opened with 67kg, followed by 69kg, narrowly missing her final Snatch attempt at 71kg to place 9th in that segment. In the Clean & Jerk, Kim powered through all three attempts, 87kg, 90kg, and 92kg, earning 5th place.

Her combined results placed her 7th overall, finishing ahead of lifters from major weightlifting nations like France, Germany, Great Britain, and AIN (Russia/Belarus).

This performance also boosts Kim’s Commonwealth Games 2026 qualification hopes, placing her 6th in the Commonwealth rankings, just 1kg ahead of Canada.

The competition was won by Italy, followed by Greece and Spain in second and third place respectively.

Meanwhile, Rylee Borg will take to the platform for Malta on Saturday, 1st November, as the championships continue.

The Malta Weightlifting Association thanked the Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta for their ongoing support in making the team’s participation possible.
