Malta Vs England: Throwback To When Maltese Goalkeeper Andrew Hogg Was ‘The Best Englishman On The Pitch’ At Wembley

Malta takes on England tonight at Wembley for the EURO Qualifiers… but while the Three Lions are comfortably through to the next stage, they will still want to put on a commanding performance in front of the home crowd. Especially considering it’s not the first time English football fans they’ve been outplayed by the Maltese.
Back in 2016, at Wembley again, England may have dominated the match and ended up winning 2-0… but it was Malta’s goalkeeper Andrew Hogg who managed to impress everyone.
Denying the English side on multiple occasions, Hogg was quickly hailed for his performance… with The Sun journalist Gary Stonehouse even saying the Maltese keeper – who was born in Kingston-upon-Thames actually delivered the “best performance from an Englishman on the pitch by a mile”.
And during an ongoing lack of faith in English goalkeeper Joe Hart, it didn’t take long for football fans to start wishing Hogg would be available to put on a Three Lions shirt.
Fast-forward seven years later, and Malta is sitting on zero points and has no way of making it out of Group C of the 2024 Euro Qualifiers… but at least, we can look back and celebrate the night we managed to take the game back to its home, and stun its fervent followers.
Do you think Malta has what it takes to pull off another commendable performance against England tonight?
