Malta Waterpolo Under 18 Team Secures Win Over Germany At European Championships

Malta’s Under 18 men’s water polo team earned a thrilling shoot-out victory over Germany at the European U-18 Championships in Romania, a result that keeps them firmly in the race for a knockout berth.
Coach Jonathan Valletta said that he is very proud that the team managed to secure the first win over Germany in any age group.
The match was evenly fought, with neither side able to secure a decisive lead in regulation time. In the penalty shoot-out, Malta held their composure to come out on top and claim two crucial points.
This result builds on Malta’s dominant 24–6 opening win against Ukraine, placing them in a strong position within Group D, which also includes Germany and Georgia. Only the group leaders advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the remaining teams must contest crossover playoffs for a place in the knockout rounds.
With two wins from their opening fixtures, Malta’s young squad have given themselves a strong platform as they continue their push to reach the latter stages of the competition.

The Germans missed twice, with Tobias Scherrieble shooting wide and Nikolao Patsiavouridis’s attempt being saved by Micallef. The final four penalties were where the true drama occurred, with Chircop scoring the penalty that gave Malta the victory.
Tomorrow, team Malta will be playing the final group match against Georgia. A win at this level of the competition would secure a top spot in the group and a better draw in the knockout stages.
Well done to Team Malta
