Malta’s eight ball teams left Cyprus with more than one gold medal last weekend, closing off a successful campaign at the EBA Nations Cup 2019.

Five teams (Men’s A Team, Men’s B Team, Under 23 Team, Under 15 Team, Seniors Over 40 Team) went over to compete at this year’s European Blackball Association Nations Cup in Ayia Napa, Cyprus,  going head-to-head against the likes of Australia, England, Ireland, Wales, Malaysia and more.

The six-day campaign at the EBA saw Malta’s junior teams finish with gold medals.

Malta’s Under 23 Team finished the group stages in first place with nine wins and one loss. Their position put them up against Northern Ireland in the semi-finals, the result of which took them to the finals, where they put on a solid performance against a stern Welsh team, concluding the match with a 13 – 4 victory.

The Under 15’s finished the group stages in second place with five wins and three losses and also met Northern Island in the semi-finals, where once again the Maltese side showed it was an unstoppable force.

Using their momentum as an advantage, the Under 15’s went into the finals against Wales with all guns blazing, besting them 8 – 2.

Another notable performance was the successful streak of Owen Amato, who faced Northern Ireland’s Ryan Marcus in the final but unfortunately fell short of gold, losing 3 – 5.

Malta’s dominant performance at the EBA puts Malta’s men’s team at an impressive second place in the world rankings, only two medals behind England.

The incredible performance put on by Malta’s Eight Ball Association goes to show that this small island has incredible athletes in all pockets of sports and the promise shown by the younger athletes spells a bright future for the sport of blackball pool locally.
