A Maltese athlete has just set a new national record in an international running championship that hosts 75 of the “best ultra-endurance runners from all over the world”.

Niki Micallef is taking part in the Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra Individual World Championships which takes place in Tennessee.

“Nestled within a field of the world’s greatest, Niki has surpassed the 30-yard marker and taken the game to a new level,” the social media page of the competition wrote.

The challenge takes place at the Big Farm in Short Creek, with the “best Backyard Ultra runners in the world” converging to compete for the coveted title of the Last Man on Earth.

The athletes will run laps of the yard until only one man or woman can complete the final yard.

“Trail Loop 11 Hours, then Road Loop 13 Hours – Repeat as Necessary,” the official page explains.

“This is truly the ultimate test. A test of not strength or speed; but a test of the pure will to win.”

Meanwhile, Niki has taken up the challenge and is representing Malta in this test of endurance, already setting a personal best and national record.

Good luck Niki!
