Three Maltese weightlifters are about to do what they do best – lift heavy objects with impressive skill and hard-earned technique – when they embark upon a journey to Delhi, India on Sunday.

This is where the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships are being hosted until 16th July!

“As the Maltese weightlifting team embarks on their journey to India, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of their nation,” said team Malta’s coach, Jesmond Caruana.

Caruana will be coaching three strength athletes – Kim Camilleri Lagana, Tenishia Thornton, and Rylee Borg – at the upcoming competition. They will each be competing in different weight categories.

The first of these, 14-year-old Kim Camilleri Lagana, is competing on 12th July, in the 45kg category, against participants from all three youth, junior and senior divisions.

Lagana recently participated in the Under 15s European Championships, where she put her skills and strength on show to earn three bronze medals.

Together with Rylee Borg, Camilleri Lagana’s competitive efforts in India are a part of the lead-up to her upcoming appearance at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Maribor, Slovenia.

Borg is a weightlifter who will be participating in the 81kg category, and his coach believes that these competitions will serve as an “excellent opportunity for Borg to test his abilities and gain valuable experience in the international weightlifting scene”.

Finally, national record holder Tenishia Thornton will be competing in the 59kg category on 13th July.

Though she is not scheduled to appear at EYOF, this week’s competition is a part of the build-up to her participation in Bucharest, where European Junior Championships will be held at the end of this month.

Maltese weightlifting has seen significant success in the past, but Jesmond Caruana believes that success to be a beginning, not an end point.

“With their dedication, skill, and the support of their country, they are set to leave a lasting impression at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and continue to inspire future generations of weightlifters in Malta.”

Good luck to all three of these amazing weightlifters!
