The Athletics Malta National Championship is an annual competition that brings together Malta’s most prolific athletes, to push themselves and each other to run faster, jump higher, a throw heavy things further, than anyone in Malta ever has before.

After this latest, hugely successful AMNC, Malta’s elite athletes still have a series of international commitments to look forward to.

These include the European Athletics Promotion International Meet in Malta – this very weekend – which will be followed by the Athletics World Championships coming up in Budapest at the end of this summer.

Ahead of these events, Malta’s athletes showed out.

Gabriel Farrugia set a new Under-20 national record in the 3000 metre race, setting a time of an 8:51.88. This new record broke his previous best by two full seconds.

While become the U-20 3000m champion, he managed to claim third place on the senior level – getting onto the Senior National Championships podium for the first time well.

Pembroke’s Mireya Cassar set a new championship record in the hammer throw with a powerful 51.05m throw.

Cassar took a podium spot four times during the National Championships – claiming top spots in the hammer throw and shot put – while also coming second in the discus and third in the javelin.

In the jumping events, Jeremy Zammit clinched the long jump while James Armani dominated the triple – while Rebecca Sare won both events among the women.
