While most of Malta is still asleep, John Camilleri is already clipping into his pedals. The 28-year-old biomedical engineer at Saint James Hospital isn’t just cycling for fitness, he’s training to represent Malta at the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo.

Born deaf, John’s world changed at age three thanks to cochlear implant surgery, opening new ways to communicate. That same determination has pushed him to become one of Malta’s most promising cyclists, with three national podium finishes and international recognition.

What began in 2017 as a personal challenge on a simple mountain bike quickly turned into a competitive passion, taking him from local rides to podiums in Andorra and Sicily.

John credits his success to consistency, a philosophy that guides both his athletic and professional life; he holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

With support from GasanMamo Insurance, which recognises the importance of backing athletes like him, John is pedalling towards Tokyo carrying not just his own dreams, but the pride of a nation. Malta is right behind him.

This is the first in a series following John Camilleri’s journey to the 2025 Deaflympics, showcasing the determination, talent, and spirit that make him a true Maltese inspiration.
