Maltese Mountaineer Aims For Argentina Climb In Support Of AAA
Maltese rock climber and mountaineer Rita Saliba will attempt to summit Mount Aconcagua in Argentina next month to raise awareness and funds for the Association for Abandoned Animals (AAA).
Saliba will begin the expedition on 21st December, aiming to reach the 6,962-metre summit, the highest peak in South America.
The summit push is scheduled for early January 2026, but reaching the target depends on weather conditions. Aconcagua is renowned for its punishing altitude, unpredictable winds and extreme cold, with temperatures often falling below –20°C and fierce winds that can make the climb a severe physical and psychological test. Weather systems can change quickly, and temperatures can plunge to below –20°C, while strong winds remain a constant threat.
To prepare, Saliba has focused heavily on endurance and strength, integrating long-distance running and strength training into her primary routine. While continuing her climbing journey, she has chosen to keep her route difficulty moderate for now, citing that summer heat and current conditions are not ideal for advancing harder climbs or attempting personal bests on rock grades.
Her lead-up training also includes international altitude preparation. In early September, she will travel to Italy to run at approximately 800 metres of elevation. Then, three weeks before the expedition, she will spend two weeks in Cervinia at 2,000 metres, training specifically to adjust for the severe altitude challenges awaiting her in South America.
Saliba believes the climb is more than personal ambition- it serves as a platform to build nationwide support for animal welfare in Malta.
