Maltese swimmer Mya Azzopardi has set a National Record during a 200m freestyle event in Turkey yesterday.

The 18-year-old took part in the International Turkcell competition hosted by the Turkish Swimming Federation, where she registered a time of 2:06.48, improving her own record of 2:06.76 which she established in Kazan, Russia in the LEN European Junior Championships in 2019.

Meanwhile, ten national team swimmers are currently attending a high altitude training camp in Erzurum, Turkey.

“Currently swimmers are undertaking what is called a “live high and train low” model. These kind of training camps are highly scientific and the main purpose of such training programme is to enable swimmers to increase their aerobic capacity” explained National Team Coach Artem Goncharenko.

The athletes are currently undergoing training in a mix of daily land, gym and pool training sessions. They are based in an accommodation at an altitude of 2500m whilst training at an altitude of 1800m in preparation for the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe in Malta.

The Maltese contingent at the training camp is made up of Luke Ellul Sullivan, Maya Galea, Sasha Gatt, Emily Grech Carr, Andrea Mallia, Amy Micallef, Michela Portelli, Rudi Spiteri, Sean Wareing and Thomas Wareing.
