Maltese Swimmer Mya Azzopardi Smashes Two National Records

Maltese swimmer Mya Azzopardi has set two new national records, one of which had been standing for a whopping 17 years.

To start, Azzopardi shattered the national record in the 100m freestyle with an incredible time of 57.75 seconds, breaking the long-standing mark of 57.97 set by Australian-Maltese swimmer Madeleine Scerri at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This record stood for 17 years and was the second oldest women’s national record

Then yesterday, Azzopardi swam the 100m backstroke during the heats of the Nationals in a National record time of 1:06.12.

Azzopardi is an athlete based between the Malta and the United States, studying at San Jose State University in California.

Azzopardi has several medals under her belt. Back in 2019 she competed at the 18th Games of the Small States of Europe and also earned the title of Malta’s best youth athlete.

But that’s not all, Azzopardi also has a substantial social media following boasting 70.5K followers on Instagram where she posts snapshots of her adventures.
