16-year-old Anton Mifsud has made Malta proud after winning his category at the Drift Championship held at the Moscow Raceway.

Anton was born in Malta to his Maltese father and Russian mother and he placed third overall in this competitive championship.

The teen’s father told Lovin Malta that Anton is a dedicated drifter who aspires to get into the Russian Drift Series which is only second to Japan’s.

“He spends approximately five to six hours a day training on a simulator. And when he’s in Malta he trains on the simulator even more because there are no opportunities for physical drifting,” his father explained.

Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers with loss of traction while still maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner.

As a motorsport, drifting competitions were first popularised in Japan in the 1970s and since then, it has developed into a subculture that racing enthusiasts enjoy watching.

“Anton’s first experience was at 13-years-old when he took his mum and I for a spin on an icy December morning. This was at the Autodrome SPB. Somewhere deep in my camera roll I have some footage of the three of us in the back seats while he drifted us around.”

“Besides drifting, Anton does very well academically. Overall, he’s a very composed boy who doesn’t panic and stays calm no matter what,” his father said to describe the 16-year-old.

Well done Anton for this great achievement, keep making Malta proud.
