The swimmers who took on the first Ultra Swimming Event Round Gozo, hosted by renowned athlete Neil Agius, are back on dry land!

Those who undertook this incredible feat had the challenge of covering a total distance of 37 kilometres around Gozo in just 15 hours. The challenge kicked off in the early hours of this morning.

“15 hours later, we’re back at Ħondoq. Our last solo swimmer is about to finish. It was wow! What a fantastic day! We had it all – flat weather, we had chop at the end. We had teams coming together, swimmers helping each other. I also managed to get in a little swim, so we really had it all,” Neil said.

“I can’t wait to share the videos and what’s next,” the swimmer continued.

Agius shared some photos and videos of the incredible event, captioning the post: “Finishes we never forget. Swimmers pushing boundaries.”

The man is known for pushing his limits. In fact, in 2021, it took Agius just over 50 hours to swim a total of 125 km from Linosa to Malta, smashing the previous record of 124.4 km held by Britain’s Chloe McCardel.

Earlier today, 13 swimmers dared to face the 37-kilometre challenge, where they had to swim clockwise around the sister island within a 15-hour limit.

The swim started from Ħondoq ir-Rummien, and the swimmers were guided and supported by the Ocean Festival crew and St. John’s sea ambulance.

While Neil shared his dismay at not participating, the athlete remained by the swimmers’ side on the crew boat, supporting all the participants and apparently even managed to fit in a quick swim himself.
