St. Michael’s School Launches Gambin Legacy Tournament To Honour Beloved PE Teacher
The Gambin Legacy basketball tournament has officially tipped off at St. Michael’s Junior School, bringing students together to honour the memory of former PE teacher Jeremy Gambin, who died in a car accident in Croatia last month.
The opening match between Ms Tania’s and Ms Jamie’s classes set an energetic tone, with both teams showing determination and enthusiasm as the community marked the start of this special event.
Organiser and PE teacher Sam Vella said the tournament reflects the principles Gambin championed throughout his career.
The Gambin Legacy tournament at St. Michael’s Junior School “isn’t really about winning or losing”, he explained, noting that teaching sportsmanship was a very important value to Gambin, whose three grandchildren now attend the school and a family member working there.
The initiative has deeply moved Gambin’s family. His daughter, Ilona Busby, said they were “deeply touched”, adding that since his passing, “the many tributes have shown us just how loved and respected he was; not only as a coach but as a person.”
As the tournament continues, students, staff, and family members are celebrating not just basketball, but the spirit of kindness, teamwork, and integrity that Gambin instilled in generations of young athletes.
Well done students!
