Team Malta Finishes Opening Day Of Davis Cup With A Second Win, Leading Its Five-Country Group
Team Malta, represented by Matthew Asciak, Matthew Cassar Torregiani and Omar Sudzuka was put to the test yesterday as the players faced both Andorra and San Marino in the Davis Cup. But they sure managed to impress!
After a 2-1 victory against Andorra, Malta was up against the next opponent of the day, San Marino.
Team Malta got off to a good start after Asciak beat San Marino’s Simoncini 6-1, 6-0, in what would be the first of three matchups.
Unfortunately Cassar Torregiani wasn’t as lucky, and fell to San Marino’s De Rossi 1-6, 2-6.
As per the format of the Davis Cup, the final round would take the form of a doubles matchup, with Asciak and Sudzuka facing San Marino’s Vicini and De Rossi.
In what was a thrilling three setter of doubles, Team Malta emerged victorious 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, giving them the overall win against San Marino.
Team Malta now heads the group along with Ireland.
Malta is set to play again on the 18th and 19th July where they will face Kosovo and Ireland respectively.
