Teenage Maltese Golfer Edges Towards British Open After Trumping International Pros In Qualifiers

One teenage Maltese golfer has come one step closer to making history after securing a place in a qualifier that could take him to the British Open, one of the cornerstone tournaments in golf.

Laurens Schulze Doering, 19, who is still an amateur golfer, turned heads in Burhill after taking on 125 players at a qualification event – 80 of whom were professional players.

A daunting prospect, especially considering that only the top nine were awarded a spot at the next stage of the event.

His journey will now take him to the final qualifying round at St Anne’s Old Links. And should Doering triumph there, he would be the first Maltese golfer to compete at the British Open, an event welcoming the biggest names in the sport, including Tiger Woods himself.

It’s worth mentioning that the youngster managed the feat coming off the back of a two-time triumph in as many international competitions, one in Cyprus and another in Croatia.

The Final Qualifying round will take place on 28th June. There, he will be one of a group of 70 players who will then be just 36 holes away from a potential place in The 150th Open.

The 36 holes will be played in one day with a round in the morning and another round in the afternoon.

Four players will get through from this qualifying round to join world-renowned professional golfers in the landmark Championship being held at the iconic venue of The Old Course at St Andrews.

Amongst the contesting 70 players at St. Annes, there would be England’s Oliver Fisher, Sandy Lyle and South Africa’s George Coetzee.
