Tenishia Thornton Breaks Commonwealth Youth Weightlifting Record At World Championships
Local weightlifter Tenishia Thornton impressively broke the commonwealth youth weightlifting record while competing at a world championship competition.
The 17-year-old starlet recently competed at the IWF Senior World Championships, held in Bogota, Colombia.
Thornton, who is also the current youth world champion, competed in the 59kg category where she finished with 84kg on the snatch and 104kg on the clean and jerks.
The commonwealth youth record was previously held by Indian lifter Sakuma Adka, at 180kg, therefore Thornton’s 188kg total topped this by 8kg.
Her efforts were not only personal bests for the 17-year-old, but she also broke four national records in the 59kg category in four different age groups.
Tenishia was the youngest athlete competing in the competition, finishing off at 33rd place overall out of 52 athletes from all over the world.
She managed to surpass athletes from many leading countries including, Australia, Italy, Spain, and Germany.
These championships also mark the first Olympic qualification event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Thronton’s participation was supported by the Malta Olympic Committee.
Well done Tenishia Thornton!
