‘The Toughest Part Of Training Was The Heat’: Fabio Spiteri Prepares For Mammoth Race In Aid Of Animal Shelters

Ultra athlete Fabio Spiteri is just days away from another mammoth race and he detailed the grueling training to Lovin Malta.

Spiteri will be partaking in the Deca 10 x Ironman in Italy. This race has been finished by less than a hundred people from all around the world and he’s attempting it for the second time yet for the same reason: to raise €100,000 for animal shelters.

The race consists of a 38-kilometre swim, a 1,800-kilometre bike ride and a 422-kilometre run.

This comes only two months after he did the 5 x Ironman World Championships in France which is made up of a 19km swim, 900km bike ride, and 211km run.

Ahead of the upcoming race, Spiteri shared some interesting details on how he prepares for such a super-human adventure. He admitted that the long distances and harsh seas aren’t the toughest part of the training… that’s actually the heat.

“Most of the sessions were done during the night but I still found some nights had the temperature and humidity at 30 to 31 degrees,” he explained to Lovin Malta.

The intense training sessions included several 300-kilometre rides, quintuple races, a 12-hour marathon pool swim with Neil Agius, a swim around Sardegna, 1,000-kilometres of cycling in five days, along with loads of 130-kilometres rides around Malta and 10-kilometre swims.

Meanwhile, when it comes to his diet, Spiteri explained that he follows no specific one but does eat a lot of pasta and fish. During the competition, the stress and the long hours cause issues with digestion so he’d often have meal replacements like high protein shakes which are easier on the stomach.

He’d also consume an abundance of fruit and smoothies and when he manages to eat solid foods, it’s usually pasta and noodles.

No Maltese person has ever managed to finish this race and Spiteri failed his first attempt last year in Brazil after encountering severe blisters which got infected. He needed to take antibiotics to fight the infection.

His announcement of both races came in tandem with the launch of Project 100 where he aims to collect “the magic number of €100,000” that will be distributed in medicine and food for animal shelters, cat feeders, kennels, and stray cats.

“In 2017, I decided to start raising money for animal shelters because very few people raise these large amounts for shelters even though they operate and depend on donations,” he explained.

Spiteri has a strong connection with animals, having 13 pets at home. His volunteer work at shelters also gives him a unique insight on the problems they face.

“They depend solely on donations to cover rent, electricity bills, food, vet bills, and more. Also, this year alone, there was a huge increase in abandonment of dogs that were not even chipped!”

“Some shelters have hit rock bottom with debts.”

So far, Spiteri has managed to raise €30,000 in these last couple of months so he needs some more help to reach his ultimate goal.
