Unstoppable: Fabio Spiteri Is About To Attempt What No Maltese Man Has Ever Done – All For Stray Animals
Maltese ultra-athlete Fabio Spiteri is about to attempt what no other Maltese man has ever completed – the Deca Ultra Triathlon.
Held in Brazil, the world cup race would includes a staggering 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, and a 42km run – every single day for 10 days straight.
That means, by the end, he would have totalled the whopping distances of 38km of swimming, 1,800km of cycling, and 422km of running.
And the best part of all of this is that Fabio is about to pass himself through this physical gauntlet all for the love of animals – attempting to raise €100,000 for local animal shelters.
“Physically and mentally, I am ready for this brutal challenge,” Fabio told Lovin Malta ahead of the race, which starts on 24th May.
Lovin Malta has previously reported on the Maltese endurance athlete’s incredible feats to raise funds for vulnerable animals before – but nothing will stop Fabio from continuing to conquer new challenges.
“But yes I do get some days where I would question myself… have I trained enough? Will I finish the race? What happens if I have a fever during the race? What happens if my knees swell up during the race?”
“But I think these are normal thoughts that haunt every athlete before enduring big events.”
“Training has been going well, peaking up to 35 hours of training max per week. My last big block of training was last week, cycling around Sicily in five days, consisting of 1,000km of cycling and 50km of running,” he explained.
Now Fabio is enjoying taper week – two weeks of easy training and lots of rest and good sleep, in order to recover from fatigue and be ready for the race in top form.
“I am really looking forward to representing Malta in this event, being the first-ever athlete to attempt such a distance,” he expressed.
During this race, Fabio will be racing with the likes of Josef Rokob, the fastest man in the “30 By 30 Ironman”, and Kostantinez Zemadanis the second fastest man in the “20 By 20 Ironman”!
