US Sun Features Maltese Swimmer And Influencer – But Undersells Her Athletic Prowess

The US Sun just featured Maltese swimmer Mya Azzopardi in an article focusing heavily on her social media presence and how “out of this world” Instagram fans think she is.

The article does mention – as a bit of an afterthought – that Azzopardi is a “Maltese national record holder” and concludes on the note that she holds “eight golds, six silvers, and three bronze medals”.

In 2019, Mya earned herself national titles and three podium finishes at the 18th Games of the Small States of Europe. That same year, she earned the title of Malta’s best youth athlete.

Throughout her swimming career so far, she won eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals, and has broken national records in the Women’s 200 and 400 freestyle, Women’s 100, 200 and 400 Medley and the Women’s 100 and 200 backstroke.

Azzopardi attends San José State University in California, where she recently placed seventh as a member of the Spartans’ 800-yard relay team at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship in Indiana.

Despite these impressive athletic achievements, readers of the US Sun would be more likely to come away from her feature thinking Mya’s swimming career to be nothing more than a smudge on her record of being pretty, and being popular on social media.

Neither of these those claims are untrue, but it should be pointed out that few male athletes are given equivalent treatment. No matter how popular or gorgeous they may be – men tend to have their athletic achievements prioritised over the size of their social media followings.

Lebron James is beautiful, but you won’t catch me rambling on about it out of context…

The Maltese swimmer has almost 40,000 followers on Instagram and regularly keeps her audience informed with pictures of her daily life and luxurious photos snapped during her travels.

The future looks wide open for Mya. Whether she will choose to pursue swimming aspirations, social media goals, something else entirely or all of the above, has yet to be seen.

We’re sure that whatever she chooses to do will be great – and we can be also be fairly certain that the US Sun will continue to focus on her fans referring to her as “way too pretty”.

What did you make of the reports on Mya?
